Can a child have autism and CAS?

A child can have both autism and Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), as these are separate conditions that can co-occur.

These are separate conditions, but they can co-occur. Autism relates to differences in social communication and behaviour, while CAS is a motor speech disorder that affects the planning and coordination of movements needed for speech.

In some children, speech differences may initially be attributed to autism, when there are also underlying motor planning difficulties consistent with CAS. This can make their speech particularly difficult to understand, especially as words become longer or more complex.

Differentiating between these profiles requires careful assessment. It is important to consider not only what a child says, but how they produce speech, including their ability to sequence and coordinate movements.

Understanding whether both conditions are present is important because it directly impacts the type of support provided. Children with CAS require therapy approaches targeting motor planning, in addition to supports that address their broader communication needs.
